CEREC Same-Day Crown
CEREC Same Day Crowns in Greenvale, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, and Melbourne
Need a crown but cannot face two appointments, a temporary, and weeks of waiting in between? At Greenvale Dental House, CEREC designs, mills, and fits your crown in a single visit.
Skip the Back-and-Forth
A traditional crown means two appointments, a temporary crown in the middle, and a few weeks of waiting. For a lot of people, that is genuinely hard to fit around work and family. CEREC removes that gap. Using a digital scan and an in-house milling machine, we can have a custom ceramic crown ready to fit on the same day, with no temporary and no second trip. If you need crown work and would rather have it sorted in one visit, it is worth finding out whether CEREC suits your situation.
Understanding CEREC Same Day Crowns
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In plain terms, the whole process happens in the chair, in one appointment. A digital scan replaces the old impression material, software designs the crown on screen, and an in-house milling machine carves it from a solid ceramic block while you wait.
The appointment covers preparation, scanning, design, milling of around 15 to 20 minutes, and same-day bonding. Whether CEREC is the right fit depends on how much tooth structure remains, the absence of active infection, and the location and complexity of the damage. Outcomes vary between patients based on those individual factors.
Is a Same-Day Crown Right for You?
Not every crown case suits same-day treatment, so your dentist will assess your situation before recommending anything. Generally, here is what needs to stack up.
You Need a Single Tooth Crowned
There needs to be enough healthy tooth structure left to support a crown, and the case needs to suit same-day digital fabrication rather than a more complex lab-based restoration.
Your General and Oral Health Is in Good Shape
Healthy gums and stable surrounding teeth matter for both the scan and the long-term success of the crown. Any underlying issues are sorted before we move ahead.
You Have Realistic Expectations About the Process
One appointment is a real advantage, but the outcome still depends on the condition of the tooth and how complex the case is. Following the post-placement care your dentist gives you makes a genuine difference to how the crown holds up.
Your Crown, Start to Finish in One Visit
The whole process happens in a single visit. Here is how that appointment usually flows.

Comprehensive Assessment
We look at the damage, check what tooth structure is left, and confirm whether same-day CEREC is the right approach for your tooth. (First part of the visit, about 15 to 20 minutes)

Tooth Preparation
Any damaged or decayed material is removed and the remaining tooth shaped so the crown will fit properly and securely. (Same visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)

Digital Scanning
A digital scanner captures a detailed 3D image of the prepared tooth and the area around it. No impression trays, no waiting for material to set. (Same visit, about 10 to 15 minutes)

Computer-Aided Design
Your crown is designed on screen using software that factors in the shape, size, bite, and shade of your natural teeth. (Same visit, about 10 to 15 minutes)

In-House Milling
The crown is carved from a ceramic block by the in-house milling machine. You can watch if you like, or simply relax while it happens. (Same visit, about 15 to 20 minutes)

Fitting and Bonding
We try the crown in, check the fit and bite, make any fine adjustments, then bond and polish it. You leave with the finished crown in place. (Same visit, about 20 to 30 minutes. Total appointment: 2 to 3 hours)
Risks and Recovery
CEREC is a well-established technology, but like any restorative treatment there are things worth knowing beforehand.
Possible risks include:
- Some temperature sensitivity in the days after the crown is placed
- Mild gum irritation around the margin of the new crown
- Fracture or loosening under very heavy biting forces
- In some cases, the condition of the tooth may mean further treatment such as root canal therapy is needed
Recovery considerations:
- Most people are straight back to normal after the appointment
- Sensitivity usually settles within a few days
- Going easy on very hard or crunchy foods in the early days is sensible
- Regular check-ups let your dentist keep an eye on how the crown is holding up

Invest in Your Oral Health
Any questions?

How long does a CEREC crown last?
That depends on the individual. Bite forces, grinding habits, oral hygiene, and how regularly you come in for maintenance all play a part. With good care, CEREC crowns can last many years, broadly in line with traditional lab-made crowns. Your dentist will give you a realistic picture for your situation. We cannot promise an exact figure.
Are CEREC crowns as strong as traditional crowns?
For most everyday situations, yes. Modern CEREC ceramic materials are comparable in strength and durability to traditionally made crowns. The right material depends on where the tooth sits and how much biting force it takes, which is worked out during your assessment.
Is the whole process really done in one day?
When it is clinically suitable, yes. From preparation through to a bonded crown, everything happens in a single two-to-three-hour appointment. No temporary, no second visit, no waiting on a lab.
