How Veneers Work
A veneer is a very thin, custom shell of dental porcelain that fits over the front of a tooth. Before one can be placed, a small amount of enamel has to be permanently removed, which is why this is not a step to take lightly. The shell is made in a laboratory and matched to the shade of the teeth around it, or a shade you choose.
This is the part to sit with: once that enamel is gone, it does not grow back. From then on, the tooth will always need some form of covering. Veneers can work well for the right teeth, but it depends on your tooth structure, your gums, your bite, and going in with realistic expectations. Outcomes vary, and we will be honest about what that means for you.
Are Veneers the Right Choice for You?
Veneers are classified as a higher-risk cosmetic procedure, so every case needs a thorough assessment before we would put a plan together. Generally, a few things need to be true.
You Have a Specific Concern and Healthy Teeth
Your front teeth need enough enamel and structure for bonding to work. Discolouration, wear, chips, or minor irregularities are all worth exploring, though not every natural variation needs treating, and we will say so if that is the case.
Your Gums and Teeth Are Healthy Underneath
If there is active gum disease or decay, that comes first. We would not place veneers over an unhealthy foundation. Sort the underlying issues, and then the cosmetic conversation makes sense.
You Understand What You Are Committing To
This is the part we want you to sit with. The enamel removal is permanent, veneers will need replacing in time, and the tooth is committed to restoration from here on. We will walk you through all of it, so the decision is a considered one rather than a spur-of-the-moment one.
From First Look to Final Bonding
Every case moves at its own pace depending on how many teeth are involved and what they need. Most run like this.
Assessment

Planning and Design
We build a plan around your teeth, which may include mock-ups or digital previews so you can see where it is heading. Expectations, limits, and upkeep are all covered here. (Same visit or a follow-up)
Preparing the Teeth
A thin, permanent layer of enamel is removed from each tooth being veneered. The area is fully numbed throughout. This is the step that cannot be undone. (1 visit, about 2 to 3 hours for several veneers)
Impressions and Shade Matching
We take precise impressions and confirm the shade, so what comes back from the laboratory sits right against the rest of your teeth. (Same visit, a further 30 to 45 minutes)
Temporary Veneers
While your veneers are being made, temporaries protect the prepared teeth and keep things looking presentable. (Same visit, a further 30 to 45 minutes)
Bonding the Veneers
Your veneers come back, we try them in, make any final adjustments, and bond them in place. That is the end of active treatment. (Follow-up in 2 to 3 weeks, about 2 to 3 hours)
Risks and Recovery
Veneers are a higher-risk cosmetic procedure, so we want you going in clear about what that means.
Possible risks include:
- Temperature sensitivity after the enamel is prepared, which can last from days to a few weeks
- Some gum irritation near the veneer edges in the early days after placement
- Chipping or fracture if the veneers take heavy biting force
- Because the preparation is permanent, the tooth will always need some form of restoration
Recovery considerations:
- Most people are back to normal straight away, though early sensitivity is common

How long do veneers last?
It honestly depends on the person. Your bite, your habits, your oral hygiene, and how regularly you come in all play a part, so we cannot give a guaranteed number of years. What we can say is that veneers will need replacing at some point, and that is worth factoring in from the start.
Can a chipped veneer be repaired?
A small chip can sometimes be patched, but anything more usually means replacing the whole veneer. And because the tooth underneath has been permanently prepared, it will always need some kind of covering. We will talk through the options if it ever comes to that.
Will my teeth be sensitive afterwards?
Some sensitivity after preparation is normal and usually settles within days to a couple of weeks. If it lingers longer or feels sharper than you would expect, give us a call and we will check everything is tracking as it should.
