Teeth Whitening in Greenvale, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, and Melbourne
Teeth not as bright as they once were? Coffee, tea, and red wine leave their mark. At Greenvale Dental House, professional whitening can lift the everyday staining that responds to it.
Why Teeth Lose Their Brightness
Years of coffee, red wine, tea, or simply the ageing of enamel can leave teeth looking duller than they once did. It is one of the most common things people ask us about, and professional whitening is often a straightforward way to address it.
What matters is being honest about what whitening can do. Not every kind of discolouration responds to bleaching, and we will tell you upfront whether it is likely to give you the result you are hoping for, rather than promising one we cannot be sure of.
How Professional Whitening Works
Professional whitening uses dental-grade bleaching agents at concentrations well above anything sold over the counter. The active ingredient, usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, breaks down the stain held within the enamel and dentine. It is applied under controlled conditions, with the gums and soft tissue protected throughout.
You can have it done in the chair at the practice, with custom take-home trays worn daily for a few weeks, or a mix of the two. The result depends on your starting shade, the type of staining, and how your teeth respond. One thing worth knowing: crowns, veneers, and fillings do not change colour with bleaching, so existing dental work stays the shade it is. Results vary from person to person.
Is Whitening Worth It for You?
Whitening is one of the more accessible cosmetic treatments we offer, but it still needs a proper assessment first. Generally, a few things need to be in place.
Your Staining Is the Kind That Responds
Discolouration from food, drink, tobacco, or time tends to respond best. Your gums should be healthy and any active decay sorted first, so we address underlying issues before whitening anything.
You Do Not Already Have Marked Sensitivity
Teeth that are already sensitive can find whitening uncomfortable, and some recent dental work in visible spots can affect suitability. We weigh this up at your consultation and let it guide which approach we suggest.
You Understand the Result Is Temporary
Whitening does not last forever. It fades gradually with diet and habits, and most people need a top-up every year or two to keep it up. Going in expecting that makes the whole thing more satisfying.
What the Process Looks Like
The path depends on whether in-chair, take-home, or a mix suits you best. Generally it runs like this.

Colour Assessment
We look at your current shade, work out what type of staining is present, and talk honestly about what whitening can realistically do for your teeth in particular. (1 visit, about 45 to 60 minutes)

Choosing the Method
Based on that, we settle on whether in-chair treatment, take-home trays, or a combination is the right path for you. (Same visit or a follow-up)

Getting Ready
Any dental work that needs doing first is taken care of, and if take-home is the plan, custom trays are made to fit your teeth precisely. (Timeline depends on any preparatory work)

The Whitening Itself
In-chair treatment is carried out with your gums fully protected, or take-home trays and professional gel are provided with clear instructions. (In-chair: 1 to 2 visits, 60 to 90 minutes each. Take-home: 2 to 4 weeks of daily use)

Checking In
We see how it is progressing, manage any sensitivity that comes up, and adjust the approach if needed. (Follow-ups as needed during treatment)

Aftercare and Upkeep
We review the final result, show you how to maintain it, and talk through what to expect over time and when a top-up might make sense. (1 visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)
Risks and Recovery
Whitening is one of the lower-risk cosmetic treatments, but there are still a few things worth knowing before you start.
Possible risks include:
- Temporary sensitivity to hot and cold, which is the most common side effect
- Mild gum irritation if the gel touches the soft tissue during treatment
- Uneven results where crowns, veneers, or tooth-coloured fillings sit, since those materials do not respond to bleaching
- Overusing whitening products can affect the enamel over time, which is why professional supervision matters
Recovery considerations:
- Most people go straight back to their day after treatment
- Any sensitivity usually settles within a couple of days
- Easing off heavily pigmented food and drink and keeping up your oral hygiene helps the result last

Any questions?

How much whiter will my teeth get?
There is no single answer, because it comes down to your starting shade, the type of staining, and how your teeth respond. At your assessment we will give you a realistic picture based on what we actually see, rather than a vague promise. Results vary from person to person, and we will be straight about what is achievable.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
It can, and it is worth knowing that going in. Sensitivity is the most commonly reported side effect, though for most people it is mild and temporary. We use techniques to keep it down and can adjust the strength or approach if needed. If you already have marked sensitivity, we will talk through whether whitening is right for you.
How long do the results last?
It depends on your diet and habits. Most people find the result fades gradually over months to a couple of years, with a top-up every one to two years keeping it fresh. Easing off coffee, red wine, and smoking makes a real difference to how long it holds.
