Children's Dentistry in Greenvale, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, and Melbourne
Dreading your little one’s first dental visit as much as they are? At Greenvale Dental House, our Tell, Show, Do approach helps children settle in and feel at ease from the start.
Good Visits Early Make Easy Visits Later
Getting children comfortable with the dentist early makes everything that follows easier, for them and for you. It also means we spot the small things before they grow, since decay in baby teeth can affect the adult teeth forming underneath.
We have looked after Melbourne’s north-west families for nearly 40 years, and a big part of that is making it simple for the whole household to keep up with care, school runs, wriggly toddlers, nervous teenagers and all.
Understanding Children's Dentistry
Children’s dentistry runs from that very first tooth all the way through the teenage years, with the weight firmly on prevention, gentle treatment, and making each visit one a child does not mind coming back to. In practice that means regular check-ups, professional cleans, fissure sealing, fluoride where it helps, and restorative care if it is ever needed. We also keep an eye on how teeth are coming through, how the jaw is growing, and whether the bite is tracking the way it should.
The Tell, Show, Do approach is the heart of it: we tell a child what is about to happen, show them the instrument, then do the step, so there are no surprises. We suggest starting around the time the first tooth appears, though every child develops at their own pace, and we shape the visit around the child in front of us.
Is It Time to Bring Your Child In?
Children’s dentistry covers everyone from the first tooth through to the end of the teenage years. Broadly, here is where it fits.
Your Child Is Due for Regular Care
Anywhere from a toddler to a teenager, your child does well with steady preventive care, a bit of developmental monitoring, and the kind of familiar, positive relationship with the dentist that makes looking after their teeth feel like a normal part of life.
Something Is Worth Catching Early
There are early signs of decay, a developmental quirk worth watching, or alignment that may be worth flagging ahead of time. Or your child finds visits frightening and needs a team used to making that feel manageable.
You Would Like a Hand as a Parent
You want straightforward, age-appropriate guidance on brushing, diet, and what each stage of your child's development brings, so you can back up good habits at home between visits.
How Visits Unfold
What each appointment looks like depends on your child’s age and what they need, but here is the general shape of it.

A Gentle First Visit
We take first visits slowly. With Tell, Show, Do, your child gets a friendly introduction to the room, a ride in the chair, and a clear explanation of each step before it happens. (1 visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)

Check-Up and Growth Monitoring
A careful look at the gums, how the teeth are erupting, how the jaw is growing, and how the bite is developing, with digital X-rays only when there is a genuine reason. (Same visit if age-appropriate, a further 10 to 15 minutes)

Preventive Care
A clean and polish, fissure sealing where it suits, fluoride based on what your child needs, and a bit of education delivered in a way that actually lands with kids. (Same visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)

Guidance for Home
Brushing and flossing pitched to your child’s age and ability, some diet advice, and a few tips for making good habits stick between visits. (Same visit, about 15 to 20 minutes)

Treatment If It Is Needed
If something does need doing, gentle restorative care is provided using child-friendly techniques, with your child’s comfort first the whole way through. (Additional visits as needed, timing varies)

Growing With Them
As your child grows, we keep track of development, flag anything worth dealing with early, and start the orthodontic conversation as the teenage years come into view. (Ongoing visits based on individual needs)

Any questions?

When should my child first see a dentist?
We suggest coming in around the time the first tooth appears. Early visits help build happy associations with the place and let us watch development from the very start. Timing does vary between children though, so if you are unsure, give us a call and we will help you work out the right moment.
How do you help an anxious child?
Tell, Show, Do is the foundation. We explain what we are going to do, show your child each instrument before we use it, then carry out the step. They can hold a mirror and watch along, and they always know they can raise a hand if they need a pause. Giving a child a sense of control makes a real difference.
How can I prepare my child for the first visit?
Talk about it positively beforehand, read a dental-themed book together if that helps, and arrive a few minutes early so they have time to take the place in before we begin. We will handle the rest, and we are happy to have a quick word with you first if you have specific worries.
Making Your Smile Affordable
