General Examination and Hygiene in Greenvale, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, and Melbourne
Been telling yourself you will book a check-up once something actually hurts? By then, it is usually the bigger job. At Greenvale Dental House, regular visits keep small things small.
Most Problems Start Quietly
Nearly every dental problem is easier, kinder, and less expensive to deal with early than once it has had time to settle in. The catch is that decay and gum disease tend to build quietly, often with nothing you would notice, until they are well underway.
A regular check-up is how we catch those things while they are still minor, and it is the same unhurried visit whether you are someone who never misses one or someone who finds the dentist hard going.
Understanding General Examination and Hygiene
A check-up and hygiene visit gets through a surprising amount in one sitting. The examination is a proper look over your teeth, gums, and the soft tissues, with X-rays if they are warranted, a screen for oral cancer, a check of how your bite comes together, and time to raise anything you have noticed or been meaning to ask. The hygiene side is the clean: lifting plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, a polish, and fluoride where it will do some good.
You also leave with advice pitched to your own mouth, on brushing, flossing, and diet, plus a plan for anything that needs a closer eye. Six-monthly suits most people, though the right gap between visits really depends on your own risk factors and history. What your mouth needs shifts with age, general health, and how it holds up over time.
Who Regular Visits Are For
Routine check-ups suit every stage of life, even if what each visit involves changes along the way. Broadly, here is where they fit.
You Would Rather Stay Ahead of Trouble
You want to keep your mouth in good shape through steady, preventive care, whether that is bringing little ones for their first visits, looking after your own adult teeth, or keeping things in check as the years go on.
You Have Existing Work or Known Risk Factors
There are fillings or other restorations worth keeping an eye on, or things like a history of gum disease, a dry mouth, or diabetes that make regular professional care matter more than it might for someone else.
You See the Point of Prevention
Looking after things regularly is generally gentler on you, and on your wallet, than waiting until a problem has grown. Keeping up the home care between visits is the half that makes the whole thing work.
What a Visit Looks Like
What gets covered depends on you, but a typical visit runs along these lines.

A Full Health Check
We go over your medical history, talk through anything you have noticed, and look carefully over your teeth, gums, and the tissues around them. (1 visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)

X-Rays If They Are Needed
Digital X-rays may be taken to catch decay tucked between teeth, early changes in the bone, or anything the eye alone cannot pick up. (Same visit if required, a further 10 to 15 minutes)

Oral Cancer Screening
A careful check over the tongue, cheeks, throat, and neck for anything out of the ordinary that is worth looking into further. (Same visit, about 5 to 10 minutes)

The Professional Clean
Plaque and tartar are cleared from above and below the gum line, the teeth are polished, and fluoride goes on where it suits your situation. (Same visit, about 30 to 45 minutes)

Advice and Planning
We talk you through what we found, tailor the brushing, flossing, and diet advice to it, and map out anything that needs attention. (Same visit, about 15 to 20 minutes)

Booking the Next One
We suggest when to come back based on your own needs, risk factors, and how things looked today. (Same visit, arranged before you leave)

Invest in Your Oral Health
Any questions?

How often should I come in?
Six-monthly works well for most people, but it is not a hard rule. If you have a history of gum disease, a condition such as diabetes, or other risk factors, more frequent visits often make sense. We will suggest a schedule based on what we find at your appointment.
Will the clean be uncomfortable?
For most people it is straightforward, though a bit of sensitivity is normal where there is heavier tartar to shift. Our hygienists work gently and read how you are going as they go, so just say the word if you would like them to ease off or pause.
What if you find a problem?
We will explain plainly what it is, talk you through the options, and help you put a plan together. Catching something early almost always means a simpler, smaller piece of work than if it had been left to grow.
